OrigamiVault — Encrypted Paper Storage
Advanced Backup Strategies
Advanced strategies for securing your encrypted backups and ensuring long-term access to your sensitive data.
🔐 Backup Strategies
- Store QR code separately from password — Never keep them together
- Make 2–3 redundant copies — Protect against loss or damage
- Use fireproof safe / safe deposit box — Physical security matters
🪙 Crypto Strategies
- Split seed: first 8 words plaintext + last 4–16 encrypted — Defense in depth
- Store encrypted part separately — Two locations, two layers of security
- Use independent password for encryption — Different from your wallet password
Example: Write words 1-8 of your seed phrase on paper in a safe. Encrypt words 9-12 with OrigamiVault and store in a different location.
👥 Split-Trust Strategies
- One person gets encrypted QR — They hold the data but can't read it
- Another person gets password — They have the key but no data
- Neither can access alone — Shamir-like security, but simpler
Perfect for: Emergency access, digital inheritance, business continuity planning.
🧳 Emergency Access / Digital Inheritance
- Instructions for trusted person — Write clear recovery steps
- Legacy handover — Plan for access after death or incapacitation
- What to include in emergency envelope:
- Printed QR codes
- Instructions: "Visit decrypt.html and scan QR code"
- Password hint (stored separately) or given to second person
- List of what's encrypted: "Password manager master password"
🛡 Physical Security Strategies
- Avoid moisture / exposure — Store in dry, climate-controlled location
- Use archival paper (optional) — Acid-free paper lasts 100+ years
- Re-print every X years — Test and refresh backups every 5-10 years
Pro tip: Laminate QR codes for extra protection, or use a protective sleeve.
📧 Using Google Inactive Account Manager (Password Delivery)
Google Inactive Account Manager (IAM) can automatically send the decryption password to a trusted person if you become inactive for a chosen period.
This is a reliable way to ensure someone gets the password only when truly needed.
How to use it:
- Store your encrypted QR code in a safe physical place.
- Add your OrigamiVault decryption password to Google IAM as a message.
- Choose a trusted contact to receive it.
- Set an inactivity period (e.g., 6–12 months).
- If you disappear or pass away, Google sends them the password automatically.

💡 Best Practices Summary
For maximum security:
- Use split-trust (separate people for QR and password)
- Make multiple copies in different locations
- Test recovery process annually
- Keep one copy off-site (safe deposit box)
For crypto seed phrases:
- Split the seed (plaintext + encrypted)
- Store in fireproof safe or safe deposit box
- Never store full seed digitally
- Use different passwords for different wallets
